This is a notice to all our clients about a very popular computer software that claims to enhance PC performance has admitted their software was compromised by hackers. The software in question, CCLEANER by Piriform, released the compromised version on August 15th and it went undetected for four weeks. Hackers inserted a backdoor in to the software that sent information about infected computers, operating system, applications on the computer and network hardware to the hackers. The hackers then used that information to insert additional malware software on to select targets. If you’d like to read more about the incident here is a link to a post by Avast who now own Piriform.
If you’d like to check your computer to see if you have CCleaner on it and want to remove it follow these simple steps.
Go to your control panel and click on Uninstall a Program or Programs and Features (depending on your operating system). If you see CCleaner on the list, right click and select uninstall. Follow the prompts until it's complete.
Alternatively you can run an update and that should replace a compromised version with the latest uncompromised version of the software.
As always we recommend that you are using an anti virus program to monitor for these things. We recommend a program called ESET NOD32.
It's also very important that you stay up to date on your operating system and applications. Keeping them updated so they have the latest security patches. The combination of a good anti virus program as well as staying up to date on your operating system and applications will help ensure you don't become a victim of malware and hackers. Nothing is ever full proof but by doing these things you can help make sure you are not a target.
As always if you have any questions or need our assistance please don't hesitate to call or email us.
